Dancers Backstage

On December 6th & 7th of 2008, Media City Ballet of Los Angeles presented a spectacular and very entertaining Nutcracker. With a nearly sold out season, MCB continues to WOW the audience.

Each dancer has their own routine before performing. Some immediately start warming up, while others calmly set up their costumes and head pieces. Some do their make-up and some will pace the halls to calm their nervous...or shall I say - EXCITEMENT.

I saw all kinds of "routines". Enthusiastic dancers taking pictures left and right for their blogs or myspace, while another girl sat in the corner massaging icy-hot on her tendons. Jet glue was applied to pointe shoes, rozin was laid out, leg warmers were piled on as the minutes ticked away before curtain.

I asked the dancers what they do or feel right before performing and they replied,
"I breath" - Melissa McComas
"I visualize what I do on stage before I go on" - Emily Morrow
"I feel nervous, but then once I'm on the floor - I feel like I'm HOME" - Raquel Cordova
"Nervous and Excited" -Andee Tims
"Have a little bit of PLAYTIME" - Selkie Hom
"I don't want to disappoint myself or my family and friend that come to watch me". - Carrie Lee Riggins

Generally speaking, internet prices will be cheaper than in store prices and even adding on the cost of postage and packing will not push the cost up too high. However, the danger of shopping for Ballet shoes on the internet is ensuring you get ones that fit. If you're a seasoned ballet dancer, chances are you have already selected your preferred make and know what size feet you are. You can buy shoes online without worrying about them being the wrong ones because the order will be exactly the same as the usual pair you buy.

Cool video. Ummm - I get really nervouse and try to go through all the steps in my head before dancing. I get really nervouse when I have family coming to see me. But I don't ever want to stop dancing. It's my life.

I think the time leading up to the moment you go onstage is really memorable. Of course there are nerves and pacing involved but there is also a sense of calm as we go around to one another wishing "Merde", giving hugs, and saying quick prayers. Its really great to be a part of a company where everyone is so supportive and encouraging. Through the nervousness and fear I feel before I step onstage I know that my teachers and fellow dancers who are like family want me to succeed and that really makes the experience worthwhile.
